The Mike Caruana 5K Run and 1 Mile Family Walk / Run was established in memory of Mike Caruana, who passed away in 2006, at the age of 35, due to a heart attack. Mike loved sports, music, and more recently running, but above all he was a family man with a huge heart. He lived in Fulton, NY, with his wife Tammy and children Alexis and Ethan. Based on his strong sense of family and community, his family established this community event in honor of Mike.
Since we began this tribute in 2007, proceeds have gone to support community-based organizations. The YMCA has been able to buy equipment for their community room, and the race has also donated money to the Fulton Police Benevolent Association and Volney Elementary school, where Ethan currently attends. Last year, the proceeds were donated to the Granby School Playground Fund and the Fulton YMCA.
The Cortini Brothers have been kind enough to donate their time and talents to provide music for the event, as well. A number of businesses and individuals have provided sponsorship and have donated items for the raffle held at the post-race party.
The goal of this event is to bring the community together in memory of Mike. Mike worked in electrical sales, was an avid Yankee fan, and was a member of the band "Family Affair," but his favorite job of all was being a dad. This is the reason that the annual race is held on Father's Day, to honor Mike and all fathers at an event that combines fitness, music, and family. Please join us on June 17, 2012, for the Fifth Annual Mike Caruana Father's Day 5K Run and 1 Mile Family Walk/Run!
